Within the Business Improvement and Support Services Branch, Library Services supports the research and information needs of all NT Health staff and affiliated health professionals throughout the Northern Territory. The Library network is located in five of the NT hospitals consisting of three staffed branch libraries located in the Darwin, Alice Springs and Katherine hospitals; and 2 unstaffed libraries in the Tennant Creek and Gove hospitals and online support for remote, regional and Palmerston staff.
To support the operations of NT Health through:
Collections Development, Management and Access - identifying, acquiring and processing evidence based resource materials to constitute a relevant, up-to-date and well-balanced library collection. The Library will ensure these resources are accessible in an equitable and easily discoverable manner utilising current technologies and using cost effective methodologies.
Information Literacy - enable our clients to have an understanding and set of abilities allowing them to recognise when information is needed and have the capacity to locate, evaluate, and effectively use the information.
Research Support - highly skilled, professional library staff will engage with and support NT Health research activities along various stages of the research life cycle.
Learning Spaces - The Library will endeavour to meet the needs of NT Health staff by providing both dedicated collaboration spaces and/or quiet work areas for ongoing professional development and learning activities.
The role of Library Services is to:
- Manage day-to-day operational activities associated with the provision of library services, including administration of library membership.
- Manage, develop and provide access to the Library collections that meet core NT Health research and business needs and reflects input and advice from clinicians, educators and invested stakeholders.
- Provide off-site access to electronic resources via eLibrary.
- Work with clients to build their capacity and skills in information literacy and searching.
- For work units, the Library will manage procurement, legal requirements and access to current print and online annual health and clinical subscriptions to published materials; including clinical decision support tools.
- Manage, develop, maintain and provide access to digital repository (ePublications) to store and make accessible NT Health electronic publications that are intended for the public.
- Manage processes that ensure NT Health Legal Deposit obligations are met by coordinating the collection and distribution of NT Health published works (print and electronic formats) to the Northern Territory Library (NTL) and National Library of Australia (NLA) to meet these requirements.
- Proactively manage the NT Health Research Collection, making NT Health publications readily accessible.
- Provide access to Library learning spaces and training rooms in Royal Darwin Hospital, Alice Springs Hospital, Katherine Hospital, Gove District Hospital and Tennant Creek Hospital, which may include:
- Video conferencing
- Multi-functional devices (copy/scan/print)
- Manage the online room booking system for training and meeting rooms (Library learning spaces) in the Darwin and Alice Springs libraries.
- Information literacy training and support for all NT Health staff will be provided through the following approaches:
- Library participation in the Health Services' general orientation for new staff
- Library systems and tools to provide access to library and journals
- Regular training on library databases to enable Health Services's staff to search resources and access relevant information
- Evidence Based Practice training sessions and online tools to ensure NT Health staff know how to access and use the latest evidence
- Online tutorials and videos to provide 24/7 assistance on how to use library resources
- Assistance with establishing journal clubs as requested
- Assistance with finding evidence for the development of policies and guidelines
- Research support including:
- Embedding specialised research skills training into Health Services' staff development programs
- Conducting literature searches by request
- The development of subject and help guides on clinical topic areas
- Training and support for reference management tools (e.g. EndNote)
- Accessing books and journals from other libraries when required (Resource Delivery)
